Abstract Synopsis

Prof. Dr. Nurhan Güler
Professor, Head of Department, Yeditepe University, Faculty of Dentistry Department
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Istanbul TURKEY

The ultimate goal of implant placement is to generate long-lasting anchorage in the
best possible position for a functionally and aesthetically optimal prosthetic solution.
Restoration of chewing function leads to positive psychosocial effects by improving
the patient’s quality of life. Implant placement in atrophic edentulous jaws can pose a
significant treatment challenge due to the extreme decrease in supporting bone
structure and the progressive nature of the process of resorption. A variety of different
treatment strategies have been presented for use in those patients seeking a fixed
implant based solution. There is no consensus as to which treatment modality is
superior to the other in literature. The decision depends upon patient factors and the
expertise and skill of the clinician. Over the last decade, patient driven demand for an
immediate single stage treatment with low morbidity has seen a significant increase in
‘graftless’ procedures. This lecture intends to display the graftless solution procedures
such as short implants, tilted implants with concepts, zygoma implants. The detailed
clinical and para-clinical testing of patients, planning in advance of surgical and
denture treatment, following of the surgical and denture protocol, the pros and cons of
immediate implantation and loading will be discussed, as well as risks and pitfalls.
